The United States Bowling Congress provides services for all bowlers in the U.S.  These services include:

  • providing a fair and consistent set of rules that govern the game of American ten pins

  • providing awards for excellence in the sport

  • certifying consistency and fairness in the equipment and facilities for the game

  • promoting the game through tournaments and sponsorships of professional events

Local associations such as PCBA carry out the day-to-day tasks of the USBC by distributing awards, certifying lanes, providing tournaments, certifying leagues, and helping bowlers interpret rules and settle disputes.

Portage County has three USBC certifying groups:  the USBC WBA provides service for women only, the USBC BA provides services for both men and women, and USBC Youth provides services for young bowlers.  This web site is provided by the USBC BA, but will include information from the other two groups when provided to us.

The purpose of this web site is to provide information for the league bowlers in Portage County, Ohio.  Here you will find contact information for the Board of Directors of PCBA, tournament schedules and results, information about the bowling facilities in this area, and links to web sites that may be of interest to our bowlers.

From the Medina Bowling web site:

Why Be Sanctioned ?

Being sanctioned is similar to joining a club or service organization.  Typically, a member pays an annual fee or dues.  A member then has the opportunity to be as involved as they choose and will receive an assortment of benefits in return.

Being a sanctioned bowler makes you a member of a very large club that includes bowlers from all over the United States and Canada.  The fees involved in membership are comprised, in the case of the Medina USBC BA, of two parts.  The first is typically referred to as the national fee and entitles you to membership in the United States Bowling Congress.  The current  fee for USBC membership is Ten dollars ($10.00).  The second part of the fee is referred to the "local association" fee and is currently five dollars ($5.00).  (The local association fee can be as much as $10.00.) The total $15.00 fee entitles you to bowl in any sanctioned activity in Medina County.  Bowlers who desire to bowl outside the boundaries of the Medina USBC BA will be asked to pay the applicable fee for whatever association governs that particular bowling activity. For example, bowling in Cuyahoga Co. (Greater Cleveland Assoc.) or Summit Co. (Greater Akron Assoc.) a bowler would be asked to pay the local association fee that applies to that association.

As mentioned above, most clubs or organizations provide a service or benefit to their membership.  The items below attempt to list some of the benefits of being sanctioned.  They are split into two parts.  Those benefits provided from the national level and those provided at the local level.

National Benefits:

  • Bonding - during the course of a season a secretary handles a large amount of money.  It is not uncommon to have balances in excess of $ 10,000.00 in a checking / saving account at the end of the year.  If the secretary should lose the money before getting to the banquet, be mugged on the way to the banquet or take their best friend on a cruise instead of going to the banquet, there would be a lot of unhappy bowlers at the banquet.  But if the league is sanctioned, the losses could very well be covered by the bonding program provided by USBC.

  • Rules - USBC provides a sanctioned league with rules that are tried, tested and enforceable.  They also have the necessary leverage to enforce the rules.

  • Standards - related to ball care, weight, materials, hardness, etc. (legal cleaning material, etc)

  • Certification - of lane / pin conditions. Each year the association has a duty to certify each house within its jurisdiction.  This is a thorough examination to ensure that all the conditions and equipment meet rigid standards.  This is an attempt to make a 200 game in the north end of the county just as legitimate as a 200 in the southern end of the county.

  • Awards - USBC makes many awards available to the sanctioned bowler.  Some of them include: 800 series, 700 series, 300, 299, 298, eleven in a row, 7-10 split, 4-6-7 10 split, 700 series, 600 series w/< 165 ave., 100 over average, 150 over series, senior awards, and more. They also provide championship pins and certificates and most improved bowler recognition to each league at the end of the year. While this is the most visible benefit of being sanctioned, it is certainly not the only benefit.

  • Forms - USBC provides all the Necessary forms for League and Tournament play. Need a form? Visit www.bowl.com or ask your local Association Manager.

Benefits provided by the Local Association:

  • WEB Page - this is provided by the local bowling association.  While we are proud of it as it is, we plan to add several features to it in the upcoming years.

  • Hall of Fame - the Medina USBC BA has developed a "Hall of Fame".  Each year two or three members are inducted.  We welcome nominations from any "sanctioned" bowler or bowling league.

  • Tournament - Each year the local association runs a tournament in one of the association houses.  We are quite proud of the "county" tournament over the past several years.  In addition, the association is active in supporting many other tournaments such as; "the National Tournament", "the State Tournament", "the City Tournament", etc.  If you have never participated in a tournament, you should try it.  It is one of the great benefits of being sanctioned.

As Earl Anthony said, "you can either simply `go bowling' or you can become sanctioned and `be a bowler'".
